Some cricket fans would argue that the cricket bat is the most important piece of cricket equipment there is. Without it, runs could not be scored, and the intricate battle between bowler and batter would be non-existent. Because of its major influence on the sport over the years, we thought it proper to take a look at how the cricket bat has evolved.

Cricket lovers today date back the history of first cricket bat in the year 1624. During that time, it resembled a hockey stick. In fact, a story of an unlucky fielder is related with cricket bat, whoc was badly injured in the head when he tried to catch the ball, which was hit by the batsman in the air.

Sadly, in the nearly four hundred years since that first fatality, other incidents involving bats have contributed to a healthy share of injuries, and in December 2007, at least one other fatality.

Only during primitive years, there were no rules and regulations that regarding the type of material to be used in the game,

the dimension and size of the cricket bat. In fact, the bowlers used underhand to deliver the ball. However, these days, things are clearer. There is a set dimension of the blade of bat, which should be around 108mm in width and 970mm in length. Cricketers should adhere to this regulation.

Though the cricket bat will look like short oars or paddle to an unknown person, but its design involves great amount of engineering, science and craftsmanship.

It was during the 1800 that willow was identified as the ultimate wood for bat making while round-arm bowling was considered as a rule. The bark powder of this wood is used to treat fever, which has been hyped in the history. In fact, at present, ‘cricket bat willow’- a hybrid, is cultivated to make bats.

Willow is well-known as a strong, lightweight wood that doesn’t rot or splinter easily, outstanding qualities for an instrument used to whack a hard leather ball travelling at more than 90 miles per hour for about 100 meters. Bat design continues to evolve, and recently manufacturers have created carbon.

A new bat is a piece of cricket equipment that requires a little preparation to prepare it for daily use. Professionals usually treat a bat once a season with linseed oil and "knock-in" the lower six inches of brand new bats with a soft mallet at a 45-degree angle to compress the fibers and strengthen the wood gradually before facing bowlers with it.

it is very simple to look after cricket bat. The most significant point is that the bats should not be stored in areas where it will get dry or just beside a heat source. In fact, the bats should be kept in cool and dry ambience, where it can ‘breathe’ in a little moisture.
