As with many things in life, being great at golf cannot come without a great deal of practice. Sometimes the biggest difference is not the club, the ball or even the form of your swing, but rather the accessories you bring to the course. Here are some golf accessories that you can use to improve your game:
Training Clubs
Historically golf accessories consisted of a glove, club covers, and tees. However, in the advanced game of today, technology is giving golfers every tool imaginable to improve their games. Nowhere is this more evident than with the popular hinged golf clubs. Both drivers and irons are available with hinged shafts to help improve a users’ swing, timing, follow through, and body movement. If a user does not swing correctly, the shaft of the club will bend, indicating his or her swing is wrong.
Since the swing is the main force behind the ball, it is crucial to hit the club’s "sweet spot" so that the ball travels as straight and long as you need it to go. If a golfer can successfully use one of the hinged clubs without bending it in the backswing, then shaving a few strokes off the scorecard becomes much easier.
Different Types of Balls
While training clubs are common tools to most golfers, most are unaware of the many other tools that can dramatically improve one’s game. The type of golf ball that a player uses can also aid them in their play. There are a variety of different balls, much different to that of the older, traditional dimple designed balls.
Today’s balls are more advanced and scientific than most players realize. Everything from the coating of the outside to the composite of the core is designed to address specific needs. Top notch companies such as Titleist, Top Flite, Callaway and Nike offer balls that will add yards on the drive, help prevent slices, or offer greater accuracy.
Calibration Devices
Every golf ball has what is called the "sweet spot", which is the point where the center point of the ball is squarely hit with the center of the club face during one’s swing. Finding this spot is not as easy as it sounds, but recent technology has made it much easier to strike. There are now devices available that will gyroscopically calibrate a golf ball, much like the balancing of a car tire. Once this is done, the ball can be marked to show the equator of the ball and axis line to visually indicate the center point. Most calibration devices are portable and run on batteries, making them the perfect accessory if another ball needs to be marked on the course.
Putters
Another key aspect of golf is the art of the putting stroke. Putting is absolutely critical in the game of golf and matches are often decided by the player that is most effective on putting green. Thus, it is essential for any serious golfer to constantly work on their putting game in addition to their fairway accuracy.
There are many putting accessories currently available- from indoor putting greens to visual aids. The rotating of the putter club during a golfer’s stroke attributes to more than 60% of an average golfer’s missed putts. Most of the remaining missed putts are attributed to misread layouts of the green itself. Typical putting greens are not flat, level surfaces for a golfer to easily tap the ball into the hole. Greens often have hills, slopes, sand traps and bunkers that all add to the level of difficulty. Being able to mentally chart the balls path to the hole is also important so that one can determine if certain mechanics need to be adjusted before actually making the putt.
